Iglesia Carismatica Casa de Oracion (4609 8th Avenue) and

Iglesia Cristiana La Luz del Mundo (4812 3rd Avenue), which was once an English Lutheran church, are sanctuaries for Hispanic groups, which started to arrive in the 1950s. Along 3rd, 4th and 6th Avenues, there are more than fifteen Hispanic sanctuaries, including

Fourth Avenue United Methodist Church (at 4614), housed in a small red brick church with a crenellated corner tower. St. Jacobi Lutheran Church (5406 4th Avenue) was built in 1909 by Norwegians. The Neo-Gothic sanctuary now displays a large banner with the name of its Chinese congregation. Asian immigrants started to settle in the area during the 1980s, establishing their own busy Chinatown on 8th Avenue between 54th and 60th Streets. Also see
